Thanks for informing me. I would also like to use this opportunity to enhance the mail a bit with more information. I'm sorry to disturb your usual development process with this interfering mail. I will try to use some QoS functionality using the following script: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,13423584?hilite=ltss However, the script has some prerequisites as mentioned below: 1. A modern Linux kernel /w HTB (http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/index2.htm ) support *enabled and the Netfilter module ipt_CLASSIFY.ko available (ipt_CLASSIFY.o for 2.4 kernels) 2. iproute /w tc that supports HTB 3. ipchains with CLASSIFY support (specifically libipt_CLASSIFY.so must be included) I would like to know if these prerequisites are supported in the 2.6.18kernel of Pardus 2007.1? Do I need to compile any new modules? Myself, I checked the prerequisite # 3 and saw /usr/lib/iptables/libipt_CLASSIFY.so therefore I assume it is OK. For #2, as far as I understood from Onur Kucuk's mail on the user list, HTB is also supported. The only thing that seems to be remaining, which I don't find in /lib/modules (not found either in 2.6.19 and 2.6.20 and 2.6.22-5 ubuntu kernels) is the prerequisite #1. I believe it changed name somehow. My target is to adjust it so that any P2P traffic on that interface would not affect normal user experience even on very high upload rates and that the script adjusts the "upload" rate of the P2P applications (or any other) dynamically depending on the current network utilization. It can also be expresses as putting the P2P traffic to the lowest priority on the upload queue. I would also be very happy if thre's any GUI development for making such function more available to the end-users. As you know, many users in Turkey still have very limited upload bandwidth and need to use some kind of traffic shaping (like cfospeed in M$ Windows) application. This may also be one point preventing users from using Pardus. I know that at least my friend was really complaining about it, that his internet experience sucks when he uses P2P in Pardus in contrast to Windows with Cfospeed aid. Thanks a lot for any information that you might provide, Best regards, Emre On 6/2/07, G?rkem ?etin < gorkem at pardus.org.tr> wrote: > > > Hi Emre > > Could you please re-send your e-mail here in English, or send your > unmodified e-mail to gelistirici at pardus.org.tr? > > This mailing list is intendeed to discuss Pardus related development > process in English. > > Best > G?rkem > > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm currently using it in my pardus system with some packages I've gathered through the playground repository as well as some others by compiling from source. All applications are now running over Pulseaudio library without problems, except Mplayer which is using an Alsa Plug device that I've created (Mplayer needs patching / recompilation) I would like to learn, if possible and if you have time to answer: - Are there any plans to include PulseAudio as default sound server in Pardus? - If yes, in which milestone? 2007.2 .3 or 2008? If support is needed, I'm OK to build all necessary packages but would need coaching as I'm not experienced in package building for Pardus. Anyway seeing as Pardus has a quite extensive selection of games in the main repository and contrib and a number of these are high quality and popular e.g. Nexuiz, Enemy Territory, I was wondering if it would be possible to have World Of Padman included. World Of Padman is a first person shooter, but with a twist. Instead of being based about shooting monsters in space etc, its bright and colorful with a cartoon feeling and without blood and violence as such. World Of Padman is a free opensource game based off the quake 3 engine Anyway I feel this would be a great inclusion for Pardus. This is a little too complex for me to package my self at present, I am still getting to grips with the basics. Anyway it would be a great addition if in the future sometime, someone could find the time to package it for inclusion into contrib. world of padman website: http://padworld.myexp.de/index.php?news Thanks Michael. Metalink is an XML format supported by download managers that lists all the mirrors & p2p sources you can get a file from, along with checksums and other stuff. The idea is to make the whole download process easier, automated, and less error prone. If you include chunk checksums, ftp/http downloads can be repaired instead of starting over from the beginning. I've put metalinks up at http://www.metalinker.org/samples.html#pardus . The chunk checksums are very important, because w/o them I got errors in the FTP/HTTP download. I ended up using bittorrent to correct the errors until I could make metalinks w/ the chunk checksums, but some people can't use p2p where they are. Around 12 download managers, FTP & p2p clients support Metalink. If you're interested in using Metalink, you can include download tools like aria2 ( http://aria2.sourceforge.net/ ) in your distribution. openSUSE, OpenOffice.org, and a bunch of other Linux/BSD distributions use it. Motivation: Most of the time we install packages that need no configuration, or the default configuration is good enough, but some packages have more complicated configuration files (i.e.: apache) and changing their configuration files can break our system. Some other times the programs have trivial changges in their configuration files but changing it manually tends to be a pain and changing it in the package is complicated, non-standard and bugy (it's easy to oveerlook something and damage some user's configuration if it is different from the default). Proposal: To manage config files migration I propose using an api based in substitution rules using regular expresions and/or context free grammars. The main idea is to include ADD / DEL / CHANGE rules to the packages in order to maintain older config files. For example supose you have a variable USE="mod_python mod_perl jakarta " in a configuration file called httpd.conf and in a later version it changes to MOD_PYTHON = ON MOD_PERL = ON JAKARTA = ON in a file called modules/httpd.modules you could write in a post-install script something like: cchange(r'^USE=\"(?P\w)*\"', r'|capitalize = ON', 'modules/httpd.conf') (This needs not be the syntax it is just an idea) and have the changes recorded in a local subversion repository. This way changes in config files can be undone very easily (not directly using svn but easier-to-handle wrapper methods and maybe a gui). To allow users to take advantage of the versioning control of the config files and not need to know about subversion or any other command I propose using iNotify to monitor the changes in /etc and if the files are modified it automatically commits the changes using logging as comment the first lines in the file enclosed by # # (or any other syntax). The two parts of this proposal are separete but the first depends on the second. I would like to develop the subversion part first and then move to the second (of course depending on the reception the proposal gets). I would like to get some feedback on this idea. I dont know if it was clear enough so pleas contact me for any comment. Hope you like it -- Nicolas Lara Linux user #380134 Public key id: 0x152e7713 at http://keyserver.noreply.org/ # Anti-Spam e-mail addresses: python -c "print '@'.join(['nicolaslara', '.'.join([x for x in reversed( 'com|gmail'.split('|') )])])" python -c "print '@'.join(['nicolas', '.'.join([x for x in reversed( 've|usb|labf|ac'.split('|') )])])" -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Is it really necessary to develop a new API, we can just use Python re module? Or any other way which fits better to that package's config file formats. Changes can be detected by examining the config files before and after running the postInstall method. Config management problem is quite complex, with many people requesting contradicting features. So it would be much easier to understand and to decide, if you present your proposal in the form of a spec document with problem statement, use scenarios, and requirements. Not something bureaucratic, but a big picture of what is going to happen in what situation (who will monitor files, why, what are the alternatives, etc).
