Best G?rkem From python at openlight.com Thu May 17 07:02:30 2007 From: python at openlight.com (George Belotsky) Date: Thu, 17 May 2007 00:02:30 -0400 Subject: [Pardus-devel] Discussion on O'Reilly about "Rethinking the Linux Distribution" Message-ID: <20070517040230.GA19846@localhost> Hello, Everyone: I am the author of "Rethinking the Linux Distribution" on O'Reilly ONLamp. A few days ago, I had the pleasure of discussing this topic with you on IRC. Thanks for posting the link to the article on your site. Unfortunately, the discussion on Slashdot is not very relevant, because the people commenting there did not read the actual article -- only the Slashdot summary. This is a known problem on Slashdot, which often leads to poor comment quality. The problem is particularly acute for articles such as "Rethinking the Linux Distribution". The topic is much deeper than it first appears, which is why the article is about 5,000 words long, with over 60 references to external materials -- including Pardus, of course :-) A 150-word Slashdot summary is great for bringing the work to the reader's attention, but the summary alone cannot form the basis of any meaningful discussion. There is, however, a good conversation in progress, right in the O'Reilly comment section for the article. The people posting there have mostly read the work itself, which opens the possibility of informed debate. Already, there are a few interesting arguments and suggestions. So, it would be great if you could change the link on your site to point to O'Reilly's comment section instead of Slashdot. http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2007/05/10/rethinking-the-linux-distribution.html?page=last#thread You would be helping to raise the level of discourse -- as well as encouraging more people to read the article itself, where they can actually see a discussion of Pardus. Best of luck in your work -- your distribution embodies lots of great ideas. George. At present when a user wishes to logout, they are shown the current screen, however if they wish to suspend to ram then the process is now very quick, they have to fold the supend button until suspend to ram appears. This is a bit cumberson and time consuming. Recently a patch was put on kde-apps, that gives an alternative logout screen, similar to that found in Ubuntu. This screen can be configured to show each logout option as a completely new button, including the suspend to disk and suspend to ram. The patch allows you to use the modified version, or return to the current kde logout style. Perhaps if that patch proves stable, then this could possibly be used at the logout screen? To me this appears to be a big usability improvment over the current version. What do you think? The patch and screenshots can be seen here (notice screenshot 1) http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/KDE+3.5.x+Alternate+logout?content=58881&PHPSESSID=b98ab5b338f4db9fc245fe1bb4c0567e Michael -- My Pardus Linux website, Blog and Gallery; www.tuxedup.com From caglar at pardus.org.tr Thu May 24 11:42:11 2007 From: caglar at pardus.org.tr (=?utf-8?q?S=2E=C3=87a=C4=9Flar?= Onur) Date: Thu, 24 May 2007 11:42:11 +0300 Subject: [Pardus-devel] Suggestion for kde logout screen In-Reply-To: <279b1f500705231544t3cbd2c3dq85ecff3b6cc7ed65@mail.gmail.com> References: <279b1f500705231544t3cbd2c3dq85ecff3b6cc7ed65@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <200705241142.11363.caglar@pardus.org.tr> Hi; 24 May 2007 Per tarihinde, Michael Austin ??unlar?? yazm????t??: > Hello, > > I have a suggestion for a change to the Kde logout screen. > > At present when a user wishes to logout, they are shown the current > screen, however if they wish to suspend to ram then the process is now > very quick, they have to fold the supend button until suspend to ram > appears. But if understand your suggestion, you want from us to provide suspend2ram and suspend2disk options as seperate buttons instead of menu items? So maybe we can change that part of ksmserver with a config option without breaking current one... Cheers -- S.??a??lar Onur http://cekirdek.pardus.org.tr/~caglar/ Linux is like living in a teepee. If you are sure same configuration works well with -80 but not works at all if you just boot with -83, sending your dmesg outputs of both sessions to me (not list) maybe helps :)? Note that this rule is for only new packages which are wanted to be merged at repository, devel or contrib. Please make your packages at your playground (http://svn.pardus.org.tr/pardus/playground) and when it is ready, move the package dir to "review/" directory (with component, e.g if the package's component in your playground is applications/network, move it to review/applications/network). Then send a mail for this package to "paketler at pardus.org.tr" with subject like "[review] applications/network/foo" To merge a package, 2 positive comment are required, if not it should be merged after 24 hours.
