I have already done this, but Abiword still uses apell en-us and not en-gb for
the spelling.  Aspell is still set to use en-us.  Aspell lists that en-gb is
available, but I do not know how to set it as the aspell default.

Also I do not use Kde, so the Kde settings will not affect me as I use Xfce.

Abiword defaults to the aspell language for its spell checking, manually
changing the language.  How can I change aspell to en-gb?
